2014: Assembly Bill 6357 (AB 6357) was approved and signed into law by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. This removed state-level penalties for medical marijuana patients with a signed, written physician's certificate letter.

2015: Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill enabling an expedited certification process for seriously ill patients.

2016: The first eight (of the expected 20) medical marijuana dispensaries open.
